Why does the back of my baby’s head become flattened or disformed?
With good reason, midwives and doctors recommend you lay your baby on his/her back to sleep. Thanks to this recommendation the cot death rate in all western European countries has dropped noticeably. Unfortunately, though, the bones of the skull are so soft during the first months of life, that with long periods lying down there is often a clearly visible flattening and/or misshaping of the head (flat head syndrome or Positional Plagiocephaly). Often a bald patch also appears on the back of the head.
However even so in most of the case your baby’s head will reshape to normal by itself some deformations may be caused by more serious reason such as Cranio Synostosis. Please always consult your pediatrician if you observe a flat head syndrome at your baby.

Tips for dealing with head deformities***

- If your baby tends to look in the most typical direction when in bed, i.e. towards the door or the window, then move the bed more often, so that the other side of the head takes the weight.
